Getting imaging for your child

Last updated October 28, 2026

Call ahead to confirm the clinic can see children, bring the requisition and your child's health card, and explain what will happen in simple terms.

Call ahead

Not every clinic images infants or young children. Ask when you call, and ask how long the visit will take. Some children's tests are done at hospitals.

What to bring

  • The requisition and your child's own Ontario health card.
  • A comfort item, like a favourite toy or book.
  • Snacks or drinks only if the clinic says it's OK. Some ultrasounds need fasting or a full bladder, and the rules for children can differ from the rules for adults.

Preparing your child

  • Explain simply what will happen and that it won't hurt.
  • For an X-ray, they'll need to stay still for a moment.
  • For an ultrasound, a probe with gel is moved over the skin. It uses no radiation.

Prep for children's ultrasounds

Prep differs by exam. Follow the clinic's or your provider's instructions.
