Bone density test (BMD) in Ontario

Last updated October 28, 2026

A bone density test (BMD) is a quick, painless scan of your hip and spine. You need a requisition from a doctor or nurse practitioner, then you book at an imaging clinic. OHIP covers it, but there are limits on how often you can repeat it.

What the test is

A BMD test uses a low-dose X-ray scan, called a DXA scan, of your hip and spine. It takes 15 to 20 minutes, doesn't hurt, and uses very little radiation.

Who it's for

Guidelines recommend a baseline test for adults 65 and older. Adults 50 to 64 may also qualify if they have risk factors, such as:

  • A previous fracture or a parent who broke a hip
  • Long-term steroid use
  • Early menopause
  • Low body weight
  • Smoking or heavy alcohol use
  • A condition that affects bone loss

How to get a requisition

You need a requisition, but any provider can order it, including a walk-in clinic. You don't need a specialist.

How to book

Search NextAva for clinics near you that offer bone density. Not every imaging clinic does BMD, so call to confirm and book. Bring your requisition and Ontario health card.

How often OHIP covers it

OHIP covers a baseline bone density test once in your lifetime after age 50. After that, repeat tests are covered about every 3 years or longer if you are on bone treatment or at higher fracture risk, and about every 5 years or longer if you are not. If you have a condition that causes bone loss, or a new fracture from a minor fall, a repeat test can be covered sooner, every 12 to 36 months.

Your results

The report goes to the provider who ordered it, who follows up with you. See how to get your test results.
