How to get your imaging test results in Ontario

Last updated October 28, 2026

Your imaging report goes to the doctor or nurse practitioner who ordered the test. They follow up with you, so the clinic usually won't give you results on the spot.

Who gets the report?

After your X-ray or ultrasound, the images are read by a radiologist, a doctor who specializes in imaging. The radiologist's report is sent to the provider who wrote your requisition, not directly to you.

How you'll hear

Every office handles this differently. Some call you, some book a follow-up visit, and some share results through a patient portal. When your test is ordered, ask:

  • How will I hear about my results?
  • How long does that usually take?
  • Do I need a follow-up appointment?

What if I haven't heard back?

Don't assume no news is good news. If you haven't heard within the time your provider gave you, call their office and ask about your results. You have the right to ask.

Can I get a copy?

Many patients can request a copy of their report or images. See how to get a copy of your imaging report and images.
