How to book an ultrasound in Ontario

Last updated October 28, 2026

Ultrasounds are usually booked ahead rather than walk-in. You need a requisition and your health card, then you call the clinic or book through its website.

Step 1: Get your requisition

Your doctor or nurse practitioner gives you a requisition that names the ultrasound they ordered. Keep it handy when you book, since clinics will ask what exam it is. If you've lost it, call your doctor's office. Many can resend it.

Step 2: Find a clinic and book

Unlike X-rays, which many clinics take as walk-ins, ultrasounds generally need an appointment. Search NextAva by postal code or location to compare clinics near you, then call or use the clinic's online booking if it has one.

When you book, ask:

  • What's your next available appointment? Ask whether there's a cancellation list if you need something sooner. See same-day imaging for more.
  • Does this exam need any preparation? Some ultrasounds do, and instructions depend on the exam. See abdominal ultrasound prep and pelvic ultrasound prep.
  • How long will the appointment take?
  • Can I send my requisition ahead? Many clinics accept it by fax, email or online upload.

Tip: have infants or young children? Call ahead to confirm the clinic can see children and is ready for you. Not every clinic is set up for it.

Step 3: Bring your documents

Bring your requisition and your Ontario health card to your appointment. An expired card can mean rebooking or being billed.

Will I pay?

Ultrasounds ordered by your doctor are generally covered by OHIP, including at privately-run clinics. If you're unsure, ask when you book.

After your ultrasound

The clinic sends your report to the provider who ordered it, who follows up with you. See how to get your test results.
