Abdominal ultrasound prep

Last updated October 28, 2026

For an abdominal ultrasound, you usually need to have nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours beforehand. Your clinic's instructions come first if they differ.

Why you fast

Food and drink can get in the way of clear images of your abdominal organs. Skipping prep can mean delays or having to rebook.

What to do

  • Nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours before your appointment. For a morning appointment, that usually means nothing after midnight.
  • Afternoon appointment? Ask the clinic whether you can have a light breakfast. This matters most if you have diabetes.
  • Medications: if you need to take a pill, ask the clinic how to do it. A small sip of water is often allowed.

Having abdomen and pelvis together?

Follow both sets of instructions. Fast for 8 hours, but drink about 1 litre of water starting about an hour and a half before and finishing about an hour before your appointment, and don't empty your bladder until the technologist says you can. See pelvic ultrasound prep.

Check with your clinic

Some clinics add their own diet rules, such as a fat-free dinner the night before or avoiding fizzy drinks. Your appointment confirmation will list your clinic's instructions, and if it's unclear, call before your visit.

Not every ultrasound needs prep. Thyroid, breast, lumps and hernia exams usually don't, but confirm when you book.
