Pelvic ultrasound prep

Last updated October 28, 2026

For a pelvic ultrasound, you usually drink about 1 litre of water, finish about an hour before your appointment, and keep your bladder full until the technologist says you can go.

Why a full bladder?

A full bladder helps the technologist see the pelvic organs clearly. Arriving without prep can mean delays or rebooking.

What to do

  • Drink about 1 litre of water (roughly 4 to 5 glasses). Some clinics ask you to start two hours before and finish at least an hour before.
  • Finish about 1 hour before your appointment time.
  • Don't empty your bladder until the technologist tells you to.
  • Fasting: a pelvic ultrasound on its own usually doesn't need it, but check your confirmation.

Transvaginal part?

If your exam includes a transvaginal component, the bladder prep is generally the same. The technologist will tell you when you can empty your bladder.

Having abdomen and pelvis together?

Fast for 8 hours, and still drink about 1 litre of water an hour before. See abdominal ultrasound prep.

Check with your clinic

Exact amounts and timing vary slightly. If your confirmation differs from this guide, follow your clinic's instructions, and call before your visit if it's unclear.
