Do I pay for an X-ray or ultrasound in Ontario?

Last updated October 28, 2026

If you have a valid Ontario health card and a requisition from your provider, most medically necessary X-rays and ultrasounds are covered by OHIP, including at privately-run clinics.

What you need

A current health card and a signed requisition. An expired card can mean being billed or rebooked.

When you might pay

  • An exam OHIP doesn't cover. A small number of exams are uninsured. Ask the clinic when you book.
  • No valid health card. The clinic may bill you or ask you to rebook.
  • A missed or late-cancelled appointment. Some clinics charge a fee.
  • Extras, like copies of images or reports. Fees can apply.

Ask before you go

When you call to book, ask: "Is this exam covered by OHIP, and are there any fees I should know about?"
