How to get a requisition without a family doctor

Last updated October 28, 2026

You don't need a family doctor to get imaging. Any doctor or nurse practitioner who sees you can order a test if they think you need it, including at a walk-in clinic or a virtual visit.

Where to get one

  • Walk-in clinics. Tell the provider what's going on, and they decide whether imaging is appropriate.
  • Urgent care or virtual care. Many offer visits for people without a regular provider.
  • Nurse practitioner clinics. Nurse practitioners can order imaging too.
  • Unattached patient clinics. Some communities run clinics for people without a regular provider. Call a local health team or Health811 to find one.

Finding a regular provider

Register for Health Care Connect online or by calling 811. It doesn't guarantee a match, and you'll need your health card. OpenPrimaryCare.com can also help you find a regular provider and explains how to get care in the meantime.

What to bring

Your health card, a list of your symptoms, and any earlier imaging results. The provider decides if a test is needed, so a requisition isn't guaranteed.
