Vascular ultrasound in Ontario

Last updated October 28, 2026

A vascular ultrasound uses sound waves to look at blood flow in your veins or arteries, often in the legs or neck. It usually needs an appointment and a requisition.

What it checks

Blood flow and blockages or clots in veins and arteries, such as leg veins or the arteries in your neck.

Prep

Most vascular exams need no prep. Some arterial exams, such as the aorta, kidney arteries or lower arterial studies, ask you to fast for a few hours. Clinics differ on how long, so check your confirmation.

How to book

  1. Get a requisition from your doctor or nurse practitioner.
  2. Search NextAva for clinics near you that offer vascular ultrasound. Not every clinic does, so call to confirm.
  3. Book by phone or online. Bring your requisition and Ontario health card.

After the test

The report goes to the provider who ordered it. See how to get your test results.
