Kidney and bladder ultrasound prep
You usually need a full bladder, so you drink about a litre of water beforehand and don't empty your bladder until the technologist says you can.
What to do
- Drink about 1 litre of water. Finish about an hour before your appointment.
- Don't empty your bladder until the technologist tells you to.
- Fasting: varies. Some clinics ask for a few hours without food, others don't. Check with the clinic when you book. Requisition forms and their website may also have guidance.
- Medications: ask your clinic if you take any on a schedule.
Why a full bladder?
It helps the technologist see the bladder and kidneys more clearly. Skipping prep can mean delays or rebooking.
Tell the technologist
If you've had kidney or bladder surgery, kidney stones, or a stent, mention it at the start.
Doppler (blood flow) exams
A kidney Doppler ultrasound is a different exam and may have different prep. Follow your clinic's instructions.
