Which ultrasounds need prep?
It depends on the exam. Abdominal ultrasounds usually need fasting, pelvic ultrasounds usually need a full bladder, and many other exams need nothing. Your clinic's instructions come first.
Usually need fasting
- Abdomen: nothing to eat or drink for about 8 hours. See abdominal ultrasound prep.
- Aorta and some arterial exams: often a few hours without food. Clinics differ.
Usually need a full bladder
- Pelvic: about 1 litre of water, finished about an hour before, without emptying your bladder. See pelvic ultrasound prep.
- Kidney and bladder: typically a full bladder too. See kidney and bladder ultrasound prep.
Usually need nothing
Thyroid, breast, scrotal and most vascular (leg vein) exams. Clinics vary on some, such as hernia exams.
X-rays
Most X-rays need no special preparation, but confirm with your clinic.
What to do
Check your appointment confirmation, and call the clinic if it's unclear. Wrong prep can mean delays or rebooking.
